I moved to Australia from India in January 2015 and I was at a great advantage by being in Australia at the right time. I got a permanent job in less than 3 weeks after I moved here. I reckon that the time of the year when you move to Australia decides how quickly you settle down in this country.
Being in Australia at the best time becomes more important when you are moving with your family. Although there is no “correct” time to arrive in Australia, some periods are less favourable than others solely from the point of seeking employment.
Here are a few factors that you may want to consider while you plan your move to Australia:
Avoid the End of Year/ Christmas period – It gets excruciatingly slow!
Since the school summer holidays in Australia coincide with the end-of-year festive period, a lot of people just take it easy and head overseas. Hiring activity particularly goes down in the period. So, if you plan to look for a job after arriving, it is a good time to arrive around from mid of January onwards.
Moreover, as rightly pointed out in the other answers, the weather in Australia around February/ March is way better than during winter in the middle of the year.
Start of Academic Year
If your kids attend school, you might want to plan your move so that they can start attending a new year in Australia from February onwards.
Financial Year in Australia
The financial year in Australia runs from July to June. Recruiting activity normally picks up towards the beginning of the financial year. Hence the months from July to October see strong hiring activity across most sectors. Consequently, hiring activity does go down towards the end of the financial year from April to June.
Bonus tips!
Regular staff members normally go on leave during the Christmas/ New Year period at the end of the year. That opens up a very good opportunity for newly arrived people to grab a temporary / casual job and gain vital local experience in the Australian market.
Many Indian migrants follow this logical approach – one of the partners migrates to Australia first, finds a job, and after that the other family member/s migrate.
